LOS ANGELES -- Rod D. Martin, Chairman of Vanguard PAC, one of America's leading conservative groups, was today named to the international Board of Governors of Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY.org).
 HOBY was founded in 1958 by Hugh O'Brian, television's "Wyatt Earp", after an inspirational two-week stay with Dr. Albert Schweitzer at his west African hospital. Since then, the foundation has trained over 345,000 outstanding high school sophomores from around the world to be responsible, compassionate leaders and to understand "America's Incentive System" of free markets and free people.
The very best students from almost 80 countries and all 50 states are selected each year to participate in state-level seminars, and the cream of that crop are sent to a ten-day World Leadership Congress in Washington, D.C. Among many other things, they gain an opportunity for a uniquely hands-on experience with the world's top leaders and innovators, from Presidents and Prime Ministers to dot-com billionaires and Oscar-winning actors. And the relationships they build at HOBY last a lifetime, not least because the kids who go to HOBY truly tend to become "tomorrow's leaders".
 "It is a tremendous honor to join men like Hugh O'Brian, Tommy Lasorda, Barron Hilton, and Dr. Michael DeBakey on this Board," Martin said, "but it is an even greater pleasure to further HOBY's work. I benefitted immensely from Hugh's influence when I was in high school, and there are few things which can so positively impact a kid's life in all the world."
Commenting on HOBY's future, Martin noted that last year's World Leadership Congress included a large delegation of students from Iraq. "HOBY is building relationships across oceans which will last for a lifetime, and developing rising leaders whose committment to freedom will be buttressed by both hands-on experience and a lot of mutual understanding. HOBY has no more valuable mission than that, and I believe we can lay a foundation in the next few years that will take HOBY's vision to parts of the world heretofore unimaginable. We can change the world by reaching its youth, and thanks to men like Hugh O'Brian and Albert Schweitzer, we already are."
