NICEVILLE, FLORIDA -- Vanguard PAC, one of America's leading conservative groups, today applauded President Bush's selection of Justice John Roberts for the U.S. Supreme Court and urged his cordial, quick confirmation.
"Justice Roberts is a strict constructionist who believes in the Founding Fathers' vision of our Constitutional system," said Rod Martin, Vanguard PAC's founder and chairman. "He is also recognized on both right and left to be an outstanding jurist with an exceptional record. It would be a horrible travesty if the Democratic leadership let politics get in the way of his quick, cordial confirmation."
Martin said history demands nothing less. "In Federalist 76, Alexander Hamilton promised 'it is not likely that [the Senate's confirmation] would often be refused, where there were not special and strong reasons for the refusal.' He further said that the purpose of allowing the Senate the confirmation power was to prevent the President from engaging in personal favoritism, like appointing his brother or a business crony.
"Absent such corruption, to deny the President his choice flies in the face of our Founder's intent. And Republicans have lived by this principle, swiftly confirming President Clinton's picks. It is long past time Democrats lived up to the same fundamental standard."
Justice Roberts has already compiled a distinguished legal career. He graduated summa cum laude from Harvard Law School, clerked for Justice William H. Rehnquist, and then served as Associate Counsel to President Reagan. Following a few years of private practice, Justice Roberts served in President George H.W. Bushs administration as Principal Deputy Solicitor General, arguing dozens of cases before the Supreme Court on behalf of the United States.
Among Justice Roberts most notable cases were two landmark decisions in which he successfully argued that the government was not required to fund abortions, and that abortion clinics could not misuse federal conspiracy laws to silence protestors. Since 2003, Justice Roberts has served as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, having been nominated by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the Senate.
Vanguard PAC will be mobilizing its national network of supporters and activists in support of Justice Roberts' confirmation.
